Lymphokine Activated Killer Cell Activity in Patients with Primary Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Stomach Cancer

Abstract
It is now generally accepted that LAK cells and NK cells have significant roles in natural immune surveillance against cancer development.
To elucidate the relationship between the LAK cell activity and cancer development and progression, we examined the LAK cell activity in 25 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, 30 cases of stomach cancer and 14 adult healthy subjects using in witro recombinant interleukin-2.
LAK cell activities were measured by using 4 hour chromium(^51)Cr) release assay against Raji cells.
1. In normal controls, LAK cell activities were 75.6¡¾2.5%. In hepatocellular carcinoma and stomach cancer, LAK cell activities were significantly decreased(62.4¡¾1.8%, p<0.05:62.9¡¾2.5%, p<0.05 respectively).
2. In hepatocellular carcinoma, no correlation between tumor mass and LAK cell activities was found.
3. There were significant differences between resectable and unresectable stomach cancer(69.8¡¾3.7%, 59.2%¡¾3.3%, p<0.05).
These results suggest that decreased LAK cell acitivity may be one of several risk factors in cancer development and progression.
